12th International Conference on Teaching Statistics
12-17 July 2026
The International Conference on Teaching Statistics (ICOTS) is held every four years in different parts of the world, and is the most important event in the statistics and data education calendar. For the first time ICOTS is being held in Australia, in Brisbane.
The theme for ICOTS 12 is "What? Who? When? How?" with Main Topics ranging widely over school, tertiary and workplace contexts within and across disciplines, technologies, training and research at all educational levels.
Hear and meet the internationally-renowned ICOTS 12 keynote speakers who are leaders and innovators across this broad canvas, providing insight into today’s world of educational opportunities and challenges.
These will be complemented by a plenary on Debates that Delve at ICOTS 12, with all plenaries built on a rich programme of speakers and topics from around the world.
The logo for ICOTS 12 represents part of the Brisbane River (Maiwar) as it winds through Brisbane (Meanjin), and represents both the continuity of the statistics education community and navigating the complexities of statistics and data science education. The dot represents the location of the conference venue, the world class Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre in Brisbane’s South Bank. Brisbane lies between the Sunshine and Gold Coasts to the north and south, and Moreton Bay and the D’Aguilar Ranges to the east and west. It is the capital city of Queensland, with its amazing diversity over forests, reef, beaches, national parks, islands, outback, wildlife, and cities.

Since 1968, the international statistical community has been meeting to share discussion, findings, reflections and plannings on the teaching and learning of statistics, data, stochastics and statistical thinking, initially organised by the Education Committee of the ISI. One of these meetings was the first ICOTS in 1982. From the beginning, all these meetings have emphasized themes such as cooperation, data, diversity, universality, outreach, sustainability, literacy, technology, development and looking forward.
Since 1993, the International Association for Statistical Education (IASE), an Association of ISI, has organised ICOTS, roundtables, satellites to the World Statistics Congress (WSC) and sessions in other international conferences. Pre-conference workshops and special interest meetings are also part of ICOTS. The theme for ICOTS 12 is What? Who? When? How? Asking questions is fundamental to fundamental to the practice and teaching of statistics and the statistical and data science education community needs to bring collaborative and collective wisdom, analysis and research to the what, who, when and how.
